PRESS RELEASE
2 February 2010
The GAA has confirmed that with the assistance of its four Provincial Councils a donation of €50,000 will be made to assist aid work in Haiti following the devastation caused by an earthquake in that country.
The funds will be directed to aid organisation GOAL which is engaged in relief work in the stricken region and is a further indication of the close ties that exist between the two bodies.
GAA President Críostóir Ó Cuana praised the work of GOAL and stressed that the Association was pleased to be able to play a small role in supporting the badly needed aid efforts.
He said: “I’d like to acknowledge the assistance of our four Provincial Councils in making this gesture possible.
“The scenes that we have all witnessed in recent weeks put in perspective the challenges we encounter in Ireland and I think it was incumbent on us to work with GOAL on this.
“GOAL is engaged in excellent work in Haiti at a time when it is so badly needed and I have no doubt that this gesture will complement the individual generosity of many of our members.”
GOAL CEO John O’Shea said: “This is not at all surprising considering the wonderful support that the GAA has extended to GOAL throughout our existence, particularly in a substantial number of fundraising events over the years. GOAL is very grateful to the GAA and its members for this donation, which will greatly assist our relief and rehabilitation effort in Haiti.”
