Jack Hughes Just Won Olympic Gold. Now He Has to Save the Devils’ Season
Ten days ago, Jack Hughes scored the most famous American hockey goal since the Miracle on Ice. Overtime. Gold medal. Against Canada. The whole country lost its mind. It was one of those sporting moments that transcends the sport itself.
Now he’s back in Newark, and the reality is considerably less glamorous.
The Devils (30-29) are fifteenth in the Eastern Conference. They need a miracle run just to sniff the playoffs. The Maple Leafs (27-24) are barely better – thirteenth, also fighting for mathematical survival. This is a game between two teams whose seasons are hanging by a thread, and both know it.
Puck drop: 19:00 ET, Prudential Center, Newark.

The Hughes Factor
Can Olympic momentum carry into NHL regular-season hockey? The romantics say yes – a player riding the high of his life should dominate. The cynics say no – different systems, different linemates, and the grinding reality of a Tuesday night game against Toronto is nothing like overtime in Milan.
The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Hughes is an elite talent regardless of circumstances. His connection with Jesper Bratt – the Devils’ leading scorer and one of the league’s most underrated wingers – gives New Jersey a top line that can hurt anyone. If Hughes comes back energised and Bratt picks up where he left off, the Devils’ offence could click in a way it hasn’t all season.

But the defence. Oh, the defence. Markstrom’s been inconsistent. The team’s scoring depth beyond the top line is thin. And 30-29 at this stage of the season means too many nights where the effort hasn’t been enough.
Toronto: Lots of Goals, Lots of Goals Against
The Leafs are the NBA equivalent of “we’ll just outscore everyone” – 3.26 goals per game (top ten in the league) and 3.37 against (fifth worst). They’ve hit the over in 22 of 51 games, the highest rate in the NHL. If you like chaos, Toronto is your team.
Matthews. Nylander. Marner. The talent is absurd. The structure is… absent.

The Odds
| Bet | Odds | Translation |
| Devils ML | 1.87 | Slight home favourite |
| Leafs ML | 1.90 | Basically a coin flip |
| Over 5.5 | 1.80 | Both teams = goals |
| Under 5.5 | 1.95 | Recent Devils trend |
Our Picks
Best Bet: Over 5.5 Goals @ 1.80 Toronto’s over rate is the highest in hockey. The Devils just came back from an Olympic break that disrupts defensive structure. Both teams need to attack. Six-plus goals is the expectation.
Smart Play: Devils ML @ 1.87 Home ice. Olympic momentum. A team desperate to prove their season isn’t dead. At nearly even money, we’ll take the emotional edge.
Longshot: Jack Hughes Anytime Scorer @ 2.40 He just scored the most famous goal in American hockey for 46 years. Confidence is off the charts. Toronto can’t defend the point guard position – or whatever the hockey equivalent is. Back the hero.
Our Call: Devils 4-3 Leafs. Chaos. Goals. Hughes scores. The Prudential Center goes mental. Perfect hockey entertainment, terrible hockey defence.
