Barcelona Are in Freefall. Milano Just Won a Trophy. You Do the Maths

Right, let’s talk about Barcelona. Two straight EuroLeague losses – thumped 74-85 at home by Paris (PARIS!), then choking a six-point half-time lead at Virtus Bologna to lose 80-85. Oh, and they got knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Baskonia. This is not the Barcelona of old. This is a team that can’t defend, can’t close games, and can’t find any consistency on the road.

Now look at who they’re visiting. Olimpia Milano (12th, 14-15) just won the Italian Cup. Their fans are buzzing. Their players are confident. And they NEED this game – at 14-15, they’re in a fight for their lives to make the play-in. Every home game from now until April is a final.

Barcelona (8th, 17-12) are safe enough in the standings but playing like a team that’s mentally checked out. Their defensive rating of 117.1 is the worst among the top ten. They concede buckets like they’re running a charity.

Why Milano Are Dangerous

Ettore Messina is one of the greatest coaches in European basketball history. He knows exactly what a team needs after winning a trophy: keep the momentum, stay hungry, channel the belief. And his players are responding – four wins from five across all competitions.

Shavon Shields is scoring at will. Bolmaro is distributing beautifully. Mirotić gives them that veteran presence inside that Barcelona simply can’t match. And at the Allianz Cloud, they’ve won three of their last four EuroLeague home games.

Here’s the stat that should make Barcelona fans nervous: Milano have won three of the last four home meetings against Barça. The Allianz Cloud is not a happy hunting ground for the Catalans.

Barcelona’s Third Quarter Problem

This is the thing nobody’s talking about enough. Barcelona fall apart in the third quarter. It’s happened in both their recent losses – they lead at half-time, then come out flat after the break. Their defensive communication breaks down, they give up easy transition baskets, and by the time they wake up it’s too late.

Joan Peñarroya needs to fix this, and fast. But fixing it on the road in a hostile arena? Against a team fighting for survival? Good luck with that.
