Let me tell you about the most absurd week in European basketball. Baskonia won the Copa del Rey. Beat BARCELONA in the semis. Lifted the trophy. Then, four days later, they went home and lost 79-108 to Valencia. TWENTY-NINE POINTS. It’s the most Baskonia thing that has ever happened.

Meanwhile, Paris Basketball are out here beating Real Madrid (92-90), Barcelona (85-74), and Panathinaikos (104-99 IN ATHENS) like some sort of EuroLeague Robin Hood – stealing from the rich, giving to… well, nobody, because they’re still 16th in the table with 10 wins from 28 games.

This game doesn’t matter for the standings. Both teams are done in Europe. But you know what? Games that don’t matter for the standings are sometimes the best games. No pressure, pure basketball, and a French derby within a derby: Nadir Hifi (Paris) vs Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot (Baskonia). Pass the popcorn.

Baskonia: The Ultimate Chaos Team

Nine wins. Twenty losses. Copa del Rey champions. Lost by 29 to Valencia. Make it make sense.

The talent is there. Markus Howard can score 30 on any given night – the man has a 40-point game this season. Moneke is a rebounding machine. Luwawu-Cabarrot brings NBA-level athleticism on the wing. But the defence? The DEFENCE? A DRTG of 122.4. That’s not a basketball team, that’s an open gym session. They let opponents score 87.6 per game. In the EuroLeague. That’s terrible.

At home, they’re 6-8. The Buesa Arena used to be one of Europe’s toughest courts. This season, it’s been a tourist destination for visiting teams looking for easy wins.

Paris: Beating Everyone Except the Table

Splitter has this team playing beautiful basketball. Hifi is the engine – 22 years old, creating shots from nothing, hitting threes at 37.2%, and absolutely fearless. Against Panathinaikos in Athens, he scored 20 and orchestrated a 29-16 second-quarter run that blew the game open.

The problem? They do this against the big teams and then lose to Anadolu Efes at home. Or Partizan. Or ASVEL. The inconsistency is maddening, and it’s why they’re 16th despite having the talent to be 10th.

But here’s the thing about Paris right now – they’re playing with freedom. The EuroLeague dream is over. There’s no pressure. And Paris without pressure is the most dangerous team in Europe.
