Ten days ago, Jack Hughes scored the most famous American hockey goal since the Miracle on Ice. Overtime. Gold medal. Against Canada. The whole country lost its mind. It was one of those sporting moments that transcends the sport itself.

Now he’s back in Newark, and the reality is considerably less glamorous.

The Devils (30-29) are fifteenth in the Eastern Conference. They need a miracle run just to sniff the playoffs. The Maple Leafs (27-24) are barely better – thirteenth, also fighting for mathematical survival. This is a game between two teams whose seasons are hanging by a thread, and both know it.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Hughes is an elite talent regardless of circumstances. His connection with Jesper Bratt – the Devils’ leading scorer and one of the league’s most underrated wingers – gives New Jersey a top line that can hurt anyone. If Hughes comes back energised and Bratt picks up where he left off, the Devils’ offence could click in a way it hasn’t all season.

But the defence. Oh, the defence. Markstrom’s been inconsistent. The team’s scoring depth beyond the top line is thin. And 30-29 at this stage of the season means too many nights where the effort hasn’t been enough.
